About We Are Fire
We Are Fire is an educational toolkit focused on restoring and supporting Indigenous-led fire practices in the Saskatchewan River Delta. It brings together both Indigenous knowledge and Western fire science to better understand how fire can be used to care for the land.
The project highlights how fire, when used intentionally, can support ecosystem health, community protection, and cultural revitalization. It promotes the idea that fire is not only a hazard, but also a powerful tool for restoring habitats, managing landscapes, and adapting to climate change.
What It Teaches
The toolkit encourages a blended approach—combining Indigenous knowledge systems with modern fire management practices. This “braided” approach helps improve understanding of fire while respecting cultural values and addressing real-world challenges like risk reduction and land stewardship.
It also provides guidance on:
- Developing fire plans (called Indigenous-led fire prescriptions)
- Building partnerships between communities and organizations
- Using fire safely and effectively on the land
- Monitoring and improving fire practices over time
Why It Matters
The goal of We Are Fire is to support long-term sustainability and resilience—for ecosystems, wildlife, and communities. By bringing fire back as a managed and meaningful practice, it helps restore balance to the land while strengthening cultural connections for future generations.
